Open Position: Part-Time Library Assistant 

The Ramsey Free Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, customer service focused part-time Library Assistant for our Circulation Department. The successful candidate should be reliable, have general technology skills, enjoy working with the public, and have exemplary interpersonal communication skills. This position will largely be focused on working the public service desk, but there may be opportunities to assist with library events and other unique projects in a dynamic and busy public library. Tasks like linking and processing newly purchased collection materials may also be included in duties. 

Responsibilities include:

-Greeting and interacting with the public, including adults, teens, and children.

-General circulation responsibilities, including but not limited to, check-in/check-out of items, emptying and checking in items from the book drop, answering basic reference and assistance questions and basic assistance for patrons with library equipment (public computers, copier, printer, etc.)

-Reliable and friendly customer service interactions.

-Processing new library cards.

-Processing new library materials.

-Shelving and shelf reading

-General clerical functions (answering email, phone calls, etc.).

-Strong computer skills are required. The candidate must be able to assist patrons

with troubleshooting computers, scanners, printers, and other technological devices.

-Basic assistance with online library tools, like Libby and Hoopla.

- Some shifts at the children’s department desk may be needed from time to time, so experience in a children’s library department or working with children is desirable, but not required. 

-Other duties as assigned.

Schedule and Salary

  • 18-20 hours per week, $18.50 per hour  

  • Hours are flexible, but do require one evening per week and some hours to cover meal breaks in shifts. One required area of hours for this position is Wednesday evenings (2pm-9pm)

  • This position will also rotate with other staff members for the library’s Saturday schedule. This means some Saturday hours, one Saturday per month. These hours are in addition to the weekly hours per week. 

Desired Skills/Experience 

  • BCCLS/Leap/previous library experience is preferred, but not required.

  • Experience working with children or public service desk in a library children’s department is desirable, but not required. 

  • New Jersey Notary certification is also a plus, but not required. 

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Open Position: Part-Time Library Page

The Ramsey Public Library is seeking an individual who likes working in a library setting and enjoys organizing materials. This position is open to high school students and college students as well as adults. Note - this position is a permanent position, not a summer only position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Shelving books and other materials back onto shelves 

  • Shelf reading and ensuring that items are in order on shelves

  • Shifting books and other materials as needed 

  • Particular focus for this position will be shelving and shelf reading in the children’s room

  • Helping to make sure library shelves are orderly, organized and clean 

Possible Other Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the preparation of crafts for arts and crafts classes at the library 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly bend to reach lower shelves

  • Ability to lift small stacks of books and other materials and push full shelving carts

Schedule and Salary

  • 10 hours per week, $15.92 per hour  

  • Hours are flexible, shifts in the morning, afternoon, evening and on Saturdays are available 

  • This position will begin in mid June to early July.
